Parenteral Nutrition VPP
Program Offerings
The following activities are available within the Parenteral Nutrition Program
- Didactic Lecture
- Case-Based Studies
- Clinical topic discussions on proper patient selection
- Pharmacoeconomic issues or current state-of-the-art treatments to improve outcomes
Statement of Need
Moderately and severely malnourished patients have increased hospital morbidity
and mortality. Those patients who acquire significant energy deficits during hospitalization
are at the greatest risk for complications. Patients at risk for nutritionally related
complications must be recognized and assessed for specialized nutritional support.
Nutritional support may be provided via the enteral or parenteral routes or through
a combination of both. The hospital clinician needs to understand the appropriate
indications for this therapy, how to choose the appropriate feeding route and formula,
how to prevent therapy-related compli¬cations, and how to assess the patient for
complications and efficacy of therapy. Clinicians in recent years have been reluctant
to utilize parenteral nutrition due to concerns about technical aspects of the therapy,
as well as its potential complications. Thus, there is an urgent need for education
on the appropriate use, benefits, and limitations of parenteral nutrition. This
CME/CE activity will provide clinical evidence for the role of supplemental parenteral
nutrition and highlight medical advances that have improved safety margins and patient
outcomes.
Intended Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and dietitians with
an interest in parenteral and enteral nutrition.
Overall Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will
- Identify appropriate uses of enteral nutrition, parenteral nutrition, or combined
methods of nutritional support
- Perform proper risk assessment for various patient populations with caloric deficits
- Apply clinical guidelines and scientific evidence when selecting nutritional support
for individual patients
- Discuss safety advances in parenteral nutrition
- Analyze and implement goal-directed therapy to improve patient outcomes with parenteral
nutrition
Learning objectives may vary within individual activities, though all are applicable
for the planned program.
